Atkinson’s Mission Statement
The Atkinson School Community believes that all students can and will meet standards of excellence. The school is committed to developing a partnership with families to ensure children’s cognitive, social, and creative growth. The Atkinson School Community is committed to creating an environment which will nurture a child’s desire to become a life long learner by engaging students in productive activities.
Principal’s Message:
Welcome to Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School, where 5th and 6th grade Freeport students rise to high expectations and become independent thinkers. Our students learn in a rigorous, diverse and multicultural environment which prepares them to be successful, upstanding citizens and career and college ready.
Atkinson School’s academic focus is aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards. Our wide-ranging curricula afford a strong foundation for students’ emergence into the higher grades. Not only are Atkinson students exposed to challenging academics, but they are encouraged to celebrate their skills and talents outside the classroom as well. Students nurture their talents through the Arts and inclusive clubs like: Band and Mariachi, Orchestra, Chorus and Select Coral, Step and Drill Team, Drama Club, Odyssey of the Mind, Mathletes, Liberty Program, Future Problem Solving, the Atkinson Afterschool Program, and Enrichment to Excellence (E2E) Extended School Day Grant.
We believe in success through partnership. Communication between school and home is vital in the success of the whole child. By working closely with the PTA and pioneering Grupo de Padres, we are able to keep parents informed of upcoming events, important dates and issues.
Wonderful things are happening at Atkinson! Students participate in the annual Hispanic Heritage assembly, 5th Grade Sports Night, winter and spring Festival of the Arts, Family Fun Night, Career Day, Field Day, 6th Grade Moving Up Ceremony, and 6th Grade Talent Show. The Atkinson community promotes a spirited environment for student learning and overall success.
Career Day at Atkinson and New Visions
On May 16, Freeport Public Schools doubled the possibilities as Atkinson and New Visions hosted their annual Career Day events, introducing students to a wide variety of professions.
At Atkinson, sixth grade students gathered in the gymnasium to meet individuals from all kinds of career paths including engineers, FBI agents, pilots, historic artifact curators and musicians.
“It’s incredibly important for students to see the many possibilities that are in their future,” said Jacqueline Feitel, guidance counselor. “Career Day gives them a tangible connection to their future and inspires them to reach their goals.”
Students from New Visions had professionals visit their classrooms, opening their eyes to the many ways they can pursue their passions. The school’s library featured a professional chef who taught students about working in a kitchen, food safety and even how to properly cut and chop ingredients. Other presenters included a nurse, a Reiki master and members of the Freeport Village Police Department, each offering engaging demonstrations and conversations about their respective fields.
“Our goal is to expose students to the world of possibilities that exists beyond the classroom,” said New Visions Elementary School Principal Jessica Romero. “By hearing directly from professionals, our students can begin to imagine themselves in these roles and understand how their learning connects to careers.”
Both schools provided meaningful and memorable opportunities for students to begin thinking about their career journeys.
Freeport students honor World Down Syndrome Awareness Day
Freeport Schools recognized World Down Syndrome Day with awareness initiatives across the district including wearing crazy socks, advocating for support of people with Down syndrome and their families and educating each other on what Down syndrome is.
Students and teachers from Ms. Jana Bisceglie’s classroom at Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School wore colorful, mismatched socks to show their support and raise awareness. Students spoke about the importance of embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity for individuals with Down syndrome.
“The goal is to create a learning environment where every student feels valued and empowered,” said teacher Jana Bisceglie. “By participating in awareness initiatives, we are not only raising awareness but also fostering a culture of empathy and inclusion.”
The day reinforced the school’s commitment to acceptance, understanding and equal opportunities for all.
